I felt nothing, she said
recalling the highs and lows,
of a long life lived
in the light and the shadows.
No joy for the children I’ve borne
No pain for the loves I’ve lost
No grace in thanks for the riches I’ve won
No wonder in awe of the sights I’ve seen
Instead,
I settle for anonymity,
deep in the tranquil countryside
with cat and dog for companionship.
Off in due course
to an unmarked grave,
no mention of the milestones in my life,
save writer.
